A group of maternity nurses at Ma Cherie Maternity Centre in Taipei have become the latest heroes in the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck Taiwan. As the earthquake struck, these brave nurses rushed to protect newborn babies at the postpartum care centre.
The CCTV footage capturing the nurses’ swift response has touched hearts worldwide. It shows them rushing to the cribs, steadying the tiny beds against the tremors, and ensuring that not a single infant was harmed. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, these nurses remained calm and focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of the infants. One nurse was seen using her foot to lock a cot’s wheels in place, preventing the cribs from rolling away or tipping over during the quake.
Strongest Earthquake In 25 Years
The recent earthquake in Taiwan has been reported as the strongest to hit the region in 25 years, with a magnitude of 7.4. This catastrophic event occurred on April 3, 2024, at about 7:58 a.m. local time, near Hualien County on the island’s east coast. The tremors were felt across the island, including in the capital city of Taipei. These were followed by numerous aftershocks, some of which were significant in their own right.

The impact of the quake was devastating. Buildings were shaken from their foundations, landslides were triggered, and sadly, lives were lost. The latest reports confirm at least 9 fatalities, with more than 900 individuals injured. In the wake of the earthquake, more than 91,000 households experienced power outages. However, despite damage to some medical facilities, hospitals in Taipei City are operating normally. Rescue efforts continue as responders search for those still missing, and the nation grapples with the aftermath of the disaster. On Thursday, Taiwan rescuers dispatched helicopters to airlift people trapped in the mountainous areas of Hualien.
As Taiwan continues its recovery efforts, the world watches and supports.
