Mzee Melchizedek Kalikwani, a resident of Iganga, Uganda, has not only achieved this remarkable milestone but has also graciously surpassed it. The centenarian recently celebrated his 110th birthday!
The Secrets To Longevity
Born on August 19, 1913, Kalikwani who marked his special day in the company of friends and family shared the secrets to his longevity in an interview with the Nile Post. “People wish to live long, but few understand what it truly entails,” Mzee Kalikwani noted. He then went on to reveal that one of the key secrets to his longevity was abstaining from alcohol. According to Kalikwan, this decision was influenced by his parents from a young age and it shielded him from the dangers associated with excessive drinking.

Mzee Kalikwani also highlighted another important aspect of his life which was his ability to resist peer pressure and avoid the influence of wrong friends, even during his youth. He pointed out that, avoiding friends who engaged in dangerous activities, such as fighting contributed to his overall well-being.
But it wasn’t just about what he didn’t do; it was also about what he did. Mzee Kalikwani emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, consisting of wholesome foods like posho, porridge, potatoes, and matooke. According to the centenarian, these traditional staples have undoubtedly played a role in his prolonged existence.
A Heart Of Gratitude
Mzee Kalikwani also expressed deep gratitude to God for the gift of life, adding that he was hoping for more years to come. Kalikwani strongly believes that his faith and firm belief in God have also played a role in his prolonged existence.
Although he stopped formal education at the primary school level, Mzee Kalikwani later learned how to dress wounds and provide treatment at a local hospital. With this skill, he eventually joined the army serving as a wound treatment specialist until he retired.

To celebrate his 110th birthday, Kalikwani’s relatives organized a birthday party presided over by the Vicar of St. Peter’s Church, Kasokoso parish, Revland, Cannon Alfred Bolya. Speaking for the family, Kalikwani’s daughter, Rose Byogero, expressed the family’s joy in celebrating her father’s age and achievements. She noted that such longevity is a rare gift and as such, should be celebrated.
In his closing remarks, the centenarian offered valuable advice to the youth of today. He encouraged them to stay clear of disruptive relationships and prioritize their well-being.
